Google Inc. is an American public corporation co-founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Being both students at Stanford University, Google became a private company in the year 1998.

The company, which was set up with $100,000 reported in the year 2006 more than $10,400 billions.

Google earns revenue from advertising, thanks to internet search, e-mail, online mapping, office productivity, social networking and video sharing services. Moreover, Google also makes a profit selling the same technologies advertising-free.

The company’s headquarter is located in California and, according to a recent research, in June 2008, the company had 19,604 full-time employees.

Although the company was founded just ten years ago, the Google web search engine, the company’s most successful product, is the brand leader. Several surveys suggest that Google owns more than half of the market share, being followed by Yahoo! with 19.9% and Live search with 12.9%.

The domain google.com attracted in May 2008 more than 135 million U.S. visitors. Such has been the company’s success that, in the last years, it has developed and acquired new technologies. Take for instance that Google nowadays owns YouTube, Google Earth, Double Click, Postini and Gmail among others.

If we focus on the technology they use, Google runs its services on several server farms, each comprising thousand of low-cost commodity computers running stripped-down versions of Linux. Even if the company does not divulge any details of their hardware, a study carried out in the year 2006 estimates that there are more than 450,000 servers racked up in clusters of data centres around the world.
