Human language technology (research centres) (Q1)

marzo 7th, 2009 · No hay Comentarios

As I have already mentioned in the previous article, there are some research centres in Europe which are dedicated to the topic exposed. Clear examples are “The National Centre for Language Technology”, the “Deutsches Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz”, or the “Edinburgh Language Technology Group”, which I now explain with more detail.

With regard to the first one, it is situated in Dublin and it is, by the way affiliated with the “Centre for Next Generation Localisation”. The “NCLT”, as it is also known, is dedicated basically to carry out research in the field of machine translation, natural language parsing, grammar induction, question answering, sentiment analysis, computer-aided language learning, software localisation and speech recognition and synthesis. Moreover, all the experts working here, come either from the “School of computing” or “The School of Applied Languages and Intercultural Studies”.

As far as the second one is concerned, being situated in Germany, it elaborates in research, development and commercial projects among other ones, document indexing for German and English, automatically structuring and visualizing extracted information and processing information encoded in multiple languages, such as Chinese and Japanese.

Last but not least, I’d like to mention the most relevant aspects of “The Edinburgh Language Technology Group”. It is as the rest, a research and development group that however, has been working in the field of natural language engineering since the early 1990s. What was originally established as part of the Human Communication Research Centre, is now based in the Institute for Communicating and Collaborative Systems of the Division of Informatics, University of Edinburgh. According to them, their main aim is to build practical solutions to real problems in text processing.
