HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language. It is the language that is generaly used to create and publicate web pages on the Worl Wide Web. It is based upon two concepts that already existed before the creation of HTML; the socalled hypertext, that offers the possibility of linking different elements, and the Standard Generalized Markup Language or SGML, which works as a tool for structuring a text through mark ups or tags before it is definitely edited.

HTML was created in 1993 by the same man who stands behind the idea of a World Wide Web; Tim Berners-Lee. HTML is generaly used in relation to the World Wide Web, as it works to describe the content and structure (paragraphs, lists, bold) of the text  of a web page, and it complements it with other elements such as images as well. It is written in tag form, surrounded by angle brackets, and it can be used through programmes such as Microsoft Office Word or Unix, among many others. HTML documents can be shown by browsers such as Netscape Navigator, Opera and Microsoft Internet Explorer, for example.

Without HTML, Internet as we know it nowadays wouldn´t exist. HTML is a key factor to the development of the World Wide Web, and its use in this area has increased significantly. In consecuence, it is possible to surf the net, buy a book, inform yourself on almost any subjet, watch videos, get to know other people…we have a universe of opportunities available, thanks to concepts such as HTML.
