The answer to this question is yes we do, one of the subjects that people on Deusto University is studying is Multiculturalism and Intercultural Dialogue. In this subject we study that nowadays the reality in most Western countries is highly diverse and multicultural. The students study that the ethnic diversity has produced all kinds o new socio-cultural phenomena that need to be investigated in order to tackle the problems our societies are facing. What students are learning is to think of social and cultural diversity as integral component of the human condition, to promote dialogue in order to gain mutual understanding and a fairer society. Apart from studyind this, students will also improve their English skills.
First to start with, we have to say the Multiculturalism definition:”Multicuralism is the appreciation or promotion of multiple ethnic cultures, applied to the demographic make-up of a specific place, usually at the organization level. In this context, a multiculturalist advocate extending equitable status to distinct ethnic and religious groups without promoting any specific ethnic, religious, and/or cultural community values as central” Multiculturalism.
In this course, the students have read are ” Heart of Darkness”, “Woman Warrior” and “In the Skin of a Lion”. One of the most important book is “In the Skin of Lion”, “narrates the forgotten stories of those who contributed to the building of the city Toronto, particularly immigrants and marginal individuals”
As everyone knows, the world is multicultural because in each country there are at least 3 or 4 societies that live together. But why is this happening? The most important point is the immigration, it is known that in the past decades there has been an increase on the immigration due to wars and other things. The perception of migration as an automatic flow in an even world that’s not you justice to the complexity of the phenomenon. Economy and societal institutions open and close gates for migrants. They also defined and differentiate between special mobility and migration.
