Human Language Technologies (Q1)

abril 22nd, 2009 · No hay Comentarios

Hans Uszkoreit is a Professor of Computational Linguistics at the Dept. of Computational Linguistics and Phonetics of Saarland University at Saarbrücken. Here it is his definition of  Human Language Technology: sometimes also referred to as human language technology — comprises computational methods, computer programs and electronic devices that are specialized for analyzing, producing or modifying texts and speech. These systems must be based on some knowledge of human language. Therefore language technology defines the engineering branch of computational linguistics. We teach computers to communicate with people.

FiLT (Language Technology Documentation Centre in Finland) also define it in his official site:  “Language technology is a multidisciplinary field, which studies technical means and methods that can be used to process natural language with computers.

Some well-known applications of language technology are for example automatic authoring tools (such as spell checking) and speech recognition.”

There are many research centres for Human Language Technologies in Europe but i’m going to mention only three:

  • DFKI LT German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence
  • IXA Taldea In Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea.
  • National Centre for Language Technology In Dublin City University, Ireland
