Shakespeare as a model

“New York becomes London” as, “El Mundo” has said, this autumm the main characters of Broadway are not going to be, Billy Crystal, Al pacino or Scarlett Johansson, is going to be the most famous playwright of the world: William Shakespeare. The Shakesperean moment of Broadway has spread through the opera (Falstaff) and also through the ballet.

By the moment, the most relevant staging has benn Macbeth (theatre). The play arrives to New York preceded by a big success in “The Globe Theatre” of London. A coliseum which is located in the banks of the Thames in order to try to recreate the atmosphere of the aoutdoor theathre of the XVI century. The music is not the only important element, all the characters wear XVI century´s suits. As Claire van Kampen says: ” We are trying to recreate a world in which Shakespeare would recognise”.

It is important to mention some of Shakespeare plays in the ballet: The earliest adaptation of Shakespeare to ballet seems to be “Noverre’s Antoine et Cléopâtre in Stuttgar”. “The Tempest” first appeared as a ballet in 1774 at the King’s Theatre London. “Hamlet” was first danced on stage in 1788 in Venice with choreography and music by Francesco Clerico, as a grand ballet pantomime and A Midsummer Night’s Dream is represented by two very well known ballets, Balanchine’s full length “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” for the New York City Ballet, 1961.”The Dream”, a one act ballet by Sir Frederick Ashton, made for the Royal Ballet in 1964.
